Review
"Kent (El Perro con Sombrero) gives Mikey the right balance of naivety and altruism... Smith's cartoon-style illustrations showcase a wide variety of Mikey's successes and failures, and Kent skillfully introduces an inventive role model for budding problem solvers. Ages 7-11." - Publisher's Weekly"Principal Mikey is a fun book. The concept is absolutely ludicrous, but that's what makes it entertaining. The changes Mikey implements in his school are definitely ones a ten-year-old would make (his first decree is "no homework!"), and it's entertaining to see the consequences of his decisions. Mikey is a fun and dynamic character... The novel's intended audience of seven to twelve will most likely delight in Mikey's antics and be thrilled by the fun and far-fetched plot. The back of the book really asks the most compelling question of the novel: "What would you do if you got to be principal of your school?" Kids will enjoy asking themselves this question as they read Principal Mikey." - Mugglenet Preview

I gave this to a teacher who was giving books with notes of encouragement to her class. She decided to read this one a chapter a day to the class. She told me the class loved it and they had even changed some things in their room from parts of the book. I've not read it, but hear great reviews from the teacher. She teaches 2nd Grade.
I just bought this book for my 10 year old nephew, who's a voracious reader. He loved it and couldn't put it down, finishing it in one night! Yay for Principal Mikey and thank you Derek Taylor Kent for your humorous story telling and for keeping my nephew giggling. Even though he lives clear across the country, I can hear his little laughs like he was in my living room!
Bought for 9 year old granddaughter, she loved the book
Adults hold kids back and block the greatest ideas, or at least, that's what Mikey gets the chance to prove along with the guarantee of tons of laughs and smiles.Mikey is ten years old and has lots of great ideas on how to solve problems. When a flu keeps half of the kids at home, he and his best friend decided to figure out where the source of this epidemic is. And they find it, but this great discovery brings something Mikey never expected. He's now been promoted to principal of the school, and what that entails is more than he might be able to cope with. What a fun read! Mikey is a clever kid, a nerd who like all kids his age, isn't taken seriously by adults. He strives for logic in his methods and is usually pretty responsible, but he has this delicious dash of normal boy rascal-ness that makes him impossible not to love and cheer on. Not to mention ideas like a slip and slide down the hallway would make almost any kid take his side. While humor is constantly present, this isn't a slap-stick or sheer funny read. Mikey runs into some more serious problems, especially as his sister faces the challenges of bullying and peer pressure. Even Mikey gets caught up in more difficult issues such as friendship and finding balance. The author weaves all of this nicely into a fast-paced story, letting the two sides (silliness and seriousness) meld masterfully. The illustrations add a dash of spice and bring Mikey and his tale to life. They are sprinkled among the pages, giving readers a break from the text every now and then. This, along with the easy and short read, make it an ideal book for even reluctant readers. It's a book kids are sure to enjoy, with a character they'll easily identify with. After all, becoming principal as a kid and changing the school fits into many kids' secret dreams.I received a complimentary copy and found it so entertaining that I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.
Mikey McKenzie is a normal ten-year-old with extraordinary ideas. He uses the scientific method to fix the problems that he sees. One day, he unexpectedly gets called to his principal's office. His crazy principals informs Mikey that she would like him to take over her spot while she is away taking care of her sick mother. Of course Mikey takes the job, because what student wouldn’t want to have a chance to change their school? The power soon goes to his head, and he realizes that there are bigger issues to deal with than having better school lunches. Will Mikey’s school get shut down when the parents realize who is running it?Opinion:Derek Taylor Kent did a very nice job portraying Mikey as a lovable character. His way of writing the story kept me rooting for Mikey throughout the whole book. The storyline was also well-developed. The events kept me hooked on the story, so at the end of the book I wasn’t ready for it to be done yet. Because I am an older reader reading this book, I didn’t expect myself to enjoy it as much as I did. I really like the humorous aspects of the story. There were many parts that had me laughing out loud. It really added to the story and made me feel like I was part of it.I think this book would be a great way for kids to transition into chapter books. Sometimes it’s hard for kids to do this, but I think this book would make it easier because it has an easy enough storyline for the kids to follow, yet still has enough twists to keep them interested.Reviewed by a LitPick student book reviewer Age 13Another LitPick Book ReviewMikey McKenzie, in Principal Mikey by Derek Taylor Kent, is no ordinary ten-year-old boy. He is a larger than life character who thinks he could solve many everyday problems if adults ever paid any attention to him. After most of the kids at school get sick with the flu, he and his best friend, Justin Gluck, set out on a mission to find out how it happened. When Mikey intentionally causes trouble in class to get sent to the principal’s office, he shares so many creative ideas about how to improve the school that the principal gives him her job while she’s away for a couple of weeks. The mean vice-principal is out to get Mikey the whole time, and Prairie View School winds up turning into a three ring circus of fun. Even the superintendent and School Board come to check out what’s happening. In the end, the characters learn about the importance of family and friendship. They realize that even though our best plans don’t always turn out the way we expect, they can turn out better. Probably the most important lesson of all is that no matter how fast anyone wants to grow up, just being a kid is a great thing to do.Opinion:Principal Mikey is a fast-paced, action-oriented story that reads like an over-the-top comedy show would play out. It also shows how a kid as principal could make school a positive place to spend time. The main characters are a good mix of boys and girls as well as men and women. A few are pictured exactly as they are described in the book. Most fit the typical personality stereotypes anyone would expect to see at school. Mikey just happens to have a mind that’s always working overtime to fix problems that no one asked him to solve, so there’s practically never a dull moment on any page. The best part of the story is that readers see him realizing he’s made some mistakes and that maybe his first opinion about people isn’t always true. Through the process of trial and error, he learns to work out compromises with people and change his plans to make school better for everyone. I think 8-12-year-olds who appreciate humor and want to read a book that makes them laugh would like this book best.Reviewed by a LitPick student book reviewer Age 12
Principal Mikey is the type of children's book that is impossible to put down! The characters are enjoyable and the plot is unique. Watching Mikey come up with amazing ideas for his school was enjoyable and really sends a message on how the school system can really become robotic and take the fun and originality away from the students. The humor is sweet and fun, telling the reader more about the character than just being a joke. The best the thing about the story is Mikey himself. He was such a brave and logically child with a lovable personality. Principal Mikey is a must read!
