Disney has done a wonderful service by releasing this beautiful book featuring the awesome art from their Little Golden Book series. Considering the books span almost 70 years, this was a nice way to showcase a lot of the images in one place. There are images from Peter Pan, Nemo, Cinderella, Frozen, Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland and many more. (Unfortunately, Beauty and the Beast was not here.) Because of the length, there is not a lot of images for each Golden Book. Dumbo had a bit more in depth look, while The Little Mermaid had just one spread. So, it will be a hit or miss on seeing your favorite pieces here. In any case, there is a huge assortment of different artworks that will capture your artistic eye and satisfies everyone's tastes. The images may span from 2 pages wide, to 1 full page to bunch of smaller ones. The quality images are top notch - sharp and clean. The pages are a very nice, glossy paper stock.The artbook also covers the history of how the Little Golden Books first got its start and its rise to popularity. How the original artists' artworks became a new style and standard even in the age of modern techniques. And how the Golden Books created and inspired a generation of artists. This was a fascinating read that perfectly complemented the art. Even the footnotes under the images deserved a look.Disney fans, artbook collectors and artists, get this book. Don't hesitate. This is a beautifully crafted book that have tons of illustration and just the right amount of reading material to keep this an actual art book. With the quality, the information and vast amount of illustrations, the price made this art book a total winner. I can't wait to start drawing.
I'm in my thirties so I grew up with Little Golden Books. My favorite were the Disney ones because of the artwork. This book seemed like it would be a win win to pay homage to the art included in those lovely books.The book is beautiful - nice, sharp images. Some are done on a double page which helps let you see the work in all it's glory. The front has a bit of gold foil for the letters- which if you buy it anywhere but in person, expect a few scratches on this bit. It's the equivalent to having a matte finish book, it's nearly impossible to keep 100% pristine from the warehouse to your home.Half of this book is dedicated to the vintage little golden book artwork which I love. The second half is about the current golden books done by disney in the 'retro' or 'vintage' style. This... I didn't like as much. I mean, yes the art is beautiful and has the same kind of charm but it's not what people expect from the front of this book. I was expecting the old works ... not half of that plus an inclusion of new work as some kind of way to also advertise for their current merchandise.I like the book all the same and the artwork/history of the first half is what is 5 stars. Just the fact that it's not 100% of this is what knocks it down 2 stars.
The version of this book from the early seventies was my favourite story book when I was a tike. As good as I remembered with even more stories now. Stunning illustrations. The illustrations gave me the biggest crush on Snow White!An excellent book for the grandparents to read to their young grandchildren. Mine is waiting for the time when I actually have grandchildren to read to. I have teens. I can't imagine any child not falling in love with this book.
5 stars for the beauty of the book itself and the contents inside. However, the first page of the book arrived with a crease in the corner. Quite the bummer as this is a gift, and I don't have the time to order a replacement before the recipient's birthday. Hopefully she'll love the book regardless! Also it arrived in the world's biggest box (could've held a kitchen broom!) so that was a bit wasteful to see.
I bought this book as a gift for my friend's daughter, but I loved it so much that I'm considering buying a copy for myself! I would love to read the whole thing, but just looking through the pictures this book is absolutely beautiful! Perfect for any Disney fan.
