Dr. Densmore was way ahead of her time working for an ethnological government project early in the 1900's. First Nations People were still looked down upon by the exponentially growing caucasian majority at this time. Her open-minded approach and genuine respect working with these aboriginals resulted in honest affection as she intimately documented the lives, religions, customs, and personalities interviewed and sited in her book. It is singly the most valuable documentation I have encountered revealing what the early lives of First Nations Ojibwe was like before Europeans moved into their tribal lands.
I am very thankful on receiving this book about Anishinaabeg customs; it helps me connect more with the past of those here before and potentially with the history of my ancestors. Very enlightening book and an interesting work.
I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I picked up "Chippewa Customs" by Frances Densmore. Written in the early part of the 20th century, it's a book that has remained readable and certainly enjoyable throughout the years.Frances Densmore paints a very vivid picture of the Chippewa/Ojibwe people, from how they picked their names, to what they wore in winter, to the fact that they liked fish-heads as a delicacy, or the sleeping arrangements inside the family wigwam. It's absolutely screaming-full of all those little details that you're constantly trying to find but never can seem to put your finger on.They're right here, of course! My only complaint is that the ceremonies (Marriage, births, etc) are only touched upon barely. I would have liked to hear more about those particular aspects.
This book is far more than it might seem, at first glance. One could wish that observers from decades ago had greater attention to detail, but she did pretty good. This is a useful book. Lots of stuff here.
