The book came in the mail, and as usual my son Thomas pounced on the box to see what was in it. Cool! was the immediate response. Thomas is 14 and this review consists of his comments to me about what he read. It took him a couple of days to read, which is about 4 hours total because he “powered through it†to use his terms.Thomas’s comments after reading through Cold-Case Christianity for Kids.1. The graphics were good, helpful, and well-done.2. All the captions from the figures are quotes from the text – emphasizing the main points.3. The logical arguments were presented in a way that ANYONE would understand them.4. The book used real-world examples, which helped.5. There are some fill-in-the-blank portions for kids to write in answers from their reading.6. We make conclusions everyday using logic. This book uses this same logic to show that God is the most reasonable conclusion to a) a universe that began to exist, b) a finely-tuned universe, c) big moral truths, and d) information in DNA. (page 50).7. It was a nice read.8. It will entertain kids, but it would be best if an adult read it with them.As a parent, I was very pleased that this book sparked some good conversations. But this happens a lot in our house with my involvement with Ratio Christi.**But if conversations on the truthfulness of Christianity are rare in your house, get this book.**Read through it with your kids. It will start your whole family on the path to exploring God with your mind as well as your heart."Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God." Honestly I wasn't sure what to expect initially. The words "Cold-Case" in the book title almost makes you feel slightly overwhelmed. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised once I opened to the first few pages. First of all the style of writing is really comfortable (easy) to read and follow. It flows. I even read it outloud because I liked the uniqueness of the book.Immediately you're placed into the story as a kid who is about to become a student police cadet alongside your two friends at the local police department for their new detective training academy. Through your participation, you learn some valuable things that will help you become your own detective.The very first thing you learn in the academy is that to solve cases, you need to use your brain.In chapter 1 you learn about presupposition and how you cannot solve cases with your mind already made up. We have to remind our children to always be open minded. Through taking observations, making lists of evidence and explanations, we can start to see our children determine for themselves what is true and what is not.What I really liked was the fact that there are illustrations, and prompts on every single page that definitely helps to keep the reader and listener engaged. I never once felt bored when reading from this particular book and neither did my children when I read it to them. There was always a question or CSI Assignment that needed to be answered through paying attention and research. Homework if you will. Great way to get those Bibles out and research verses and asking related questions.Overall, what a great interactive guide for children and families. It makes researching truths a lot more fun! What I am taking from the investigating was that you have to teach a child to find their own truth in their beliefs, so they can teach others to believe in them too. I read the adult version of this book and was impressed, but when I saw this version for kids, I was really intrigued. After reading the book myself, I purchased copies to give to each of the older children in my church. They loved it so much that between Sunday school and church, we didn't hear a peep out of them because they were so busy reading! One boy even told me that this is the best book he has ever read!The material in the book is really well-done. It alternates between searching for the owner of a found skateboard and the search for the truth about Jesus, using the lessons learned from the skateboard case to the case about Jesus. It encourages readers to decide for themselves what to think about the truth about Jesus.This book has really good points, not the often watered down material given to children. Thus, when a friend from Taiwan announced that her resolution this year is to find God, I offered her Cold Case Christianity, but she chose the children's version because her English is not as fluent. And reading this book helped me to reinforce the key points of the original book.
My 9 year old as been questioning his faith and this answered so many of his questions and then some. Love the format of the mystery. At times it seemed he was more interested in the skateboard mystery, but by the end I realized he had really absorbed the apologetics. Didn't really care much about the printouts and video links, but some others might really enjoy those. I will say, the website is not very easy to maneuver. There's no place to easily print off all the activity sheets at once, so you have to go through each chapters webpage. Clunky.
