From School Library Journal
Gr 1–4—Clearly meant to introduce the ballet based on Hoffmann's classic story, this inviting adaptation instructs readers to press a musical note on each page in order to hear an enlivening snippet of Tchaikovsky's music. While Clara impatiently awaits the arrival of her toymaker godfather, guests of varying ages and ethnicities, attired in 19th-century styles, are enjoying the festive Christmas party hosted by her parents. The vibrant illustrations are in a polished cartoon style reminiscent of early animated Disney films, with the text attractively set apart from the richly detailed visuals, encircled by colorful shapes, flowers, or wreath-like designs. Clara's fantastical dreams never seem too busy or overcrowded, and are, again, populated with diverse figures. Back matter includes a brief overview of Tchaikovsky and a glossary of musical terms. Buttons for the 10 selections used throughout are together on the final page, along with orchestral information. Readers are encouraged to let the music inspire their own theatrical creativity. VERDICT Any disruption to the perceived tranquility of the library atmosphere due to the audio component of this book will be offset by the information gleaned and the jump-start it provides to the imagination of its readers.—Linda Israelson, Los Angeles Public Library

I had high hopes for this book, as our daughter absolutely loves the other two books in the Story Orchestra series (which feature Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty), but I was disappointed in this one.The illustrations are beautiful, but they are less complex and engaging than the illustrations in the other two books in the series. But my biggest complaint is the music.First, the buttons are WAY too difficult to press. I have to push down with pretty significant force to get the music to play, and there is no way my daughter can do it. The buttons are located in the back cover, so the first few pages are particularly difficult because you have to push through 9-10 pages to activate the sound.Second, the music excerpts are VERY short -- sometimes just 5 seconds or so. I realize the intent isn't for children to listen to entire movements of the ballet, but come on... 5 seconds is a tease. I know the clips could be longer because there are plenty of similar books out there with excerpts that are 10-15 seconds (for example, the "Poppy" series). My daughter still enjoys this book, but I confess that I was very disappointed, especially after we enjoyed the first two books in the series so much.
I home school my children and we are just starting to study composers. I am not a musical mom. I didn't grow up watching/ hearing orchestras or taking any kind of music lessons. I knew I didn't want that for my kids but also didn't really know where to start. These books have not only made my kids want to hear more of the real songs but me as well. When we listen to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker my kids can now tell me what part of the story it is by listening to the music ( because of remembering the book and its lovely illustrations). My 3 year old will yell something like "the mouse king!" And my 6 year old will matter of factly say "that's the sugar plum fairy dancing" (while the 1 year old practices his fine motor skills and claps whenever he successfully makes the music play)We hope more come out!
A wonderful condensed version of the classic with the perfect clip of music for each scene. The sound quality is actually decent and the back has a wonderful collection of small facts about each piece. My son (3 years) enjoys reading the book and listening to the music. I removed one star for the fact that the buttons to begin the music are too difficult for him to press by himself (or should I be adding a star for that?). On the positive side, it is not possible to press (or repress) the same button to start (or restart) the music while one is already playing. I deem that a big positive because you don’t end up with the skipping track effect when the button is pushed as fast as possible. I also like the fact that you can change the batteries when they wear out.
Beautifully illustrated and wonderfully educational. However I only could give 4 stars because, as other reviewers have stated, the buttons are unusually difficult to press. Sometimes it takes me 4-5 times, so a child would most likely need an adult to access the music.
Fantastic book combining the music of the nutcracker with the timeless christmas story. My kids (under 5) can pick out the music of the nutcracker. I wish there were more books like this
We got our 2 yo the Vivaldi “Four Seasons†book and she loved it so much we decided to get her this one for Christmas this year. As usual, the illustrations are beautiful, colorful, and imaginative. The story is classic and simple enough for her to follow. The music buttons are a little challenging for a younger child to push, but she can totally do it. We can’t wait to give this to her.
So many musical books for kids feature watered down versions of music, this book actually sounds like an orchestra. I just wish the song clips were longer. The last page has descriptions of the songs and talks about meter, what makes a walz, how some of the songs are inspired by Russian folk music, etc. I learned a lot from this book myself, so great for all age ranges. My toddler loves it and can pronounce “Tchaikovsky†now. Great introduction to music. As other people have mentioned the “buttons†are just circles on the page that cue a sensor on the back of the book so a little hard to press for tiny hands
Beautiful illustrations and the added music is amazing BUT it is hard to push the buttons through all the pages. The music buttons are in the back cover, so you have to push the area in the "sweet spot" and hard or flip to the back to press easily and then back to the page you are reading. Not nearly as fun though flipping back and forth. Nice idea though.
