SPOILERSNOTHING HAPPENS. Christopher's diary, the little we get of it, shows him to be very ... smug? We know from FITA that he is a know-it-all, but his diary almost makes seem like he has a form of autism because he is so very unemotional. For a little while I thought maybe that was part of the secrets that would be revealed... that the Dollanganger children DID have, as the grandmother said, "hidden afflictions". But no, no secrets revealed, nothing new other than Christopher did doubt his mother all along and he was putting on a brave face for Cathy and the twins (and how surprising is that since Cathy always wondered how he could still love and trust their mother). But that just seems wrong, because that is basically like Christopher was hiding his true self from Cathy, and we know that Christopher always said Cathy was the only person who understood him and knew him and because of that Cathy was the only woman he could ever love.The timelines are jumbled, too. Why does no one remember the party where Jory was injured? It should have happened in recent memory. What happened to all of Bart's millions of dollars? What happened to Cindy? Where are Jory and his family? So many questions that could have been answered....If we had to have someone discover the diary and "read" it to us, I would much rather have had it like when Annie reads Leigh's diary in Web of Dreams. If they were going to revive this series, I would have liked to know more about Malcolm. What really happened with his mother, why did she leave and what made him so obsessed with his mother?
I wasn't a fan. After reading this, I don't really have the desire to read book 2 or 3, because I looked ahead at those reviews and a lot of people thought the stories were awful and creepy. This book was pretty boring and moved slowly. The main character was supposedly a distant cousin of the Foxworth clan on her deceased mother's side. Ok that sounds a little interesting. Her dad never wants to talk about it but he is doing construction on the land where the second Foxworth Hall was, that Bart apparently burned to the ground. That in itself doesn't make a whole lot of sense. They refer to Bart as some crazy old man, but at this point wouldn't he be only in his mid-forties? I don't get why he would burn the house to the ground when he wanted it restored to almost exactly how the original Foxworth Hall looked. He was proud of the house and at the end of Seeds of Yesterday, it seemed like he was getting his act together finally. There wasn't even any mention that he was Cathy's child, I don't think.Anyway, so Kristin finds this diary which was apparently in the basement of Foxworth Hall dated 1960 and it was Christopher's diary. Why would the diary be in the basement? Just because, I guess. Otherwise there wouldn't be this slow, boring book to read. Kristin quickly becomes completely obsessed with Christopher, which I get it, you're reading about one of your relatives, but she really gets too into it. I think it'd be interesting to read a diary from one of my relatives but even if it was as disturbing as that, I wouldn't let it control my life.Aside from that, there isn't much to Kristin. She's interested in some boy and gets more interested in him as the book goes on. She has a good relationship with her dad. She's a good student. Boring.I found myself skimming over the boring parts of her life to get to the diary parts. Which weren't that interesting either. Cathy comes off as a spoiled whiny stupid brat. The twins were an afterthought to Christopher apparently because he didn't mention them too much. The diary in the book ended with them being at Foxworth Hall for only a few months. I won't spoil the ending for you but be prepared, it's really lackluster. I don't know if I want to bother reading the second book. I think I'll re-read something that was actually written by V.C. Andrews, not some weirdo ghostwriter.
The original books were captivating at times, but these new additions to the series are completely dull. The real VC Andrews wrote the books in a way to make you feel something, often forcing you to sympathize with things outside of your comfort zone. This book not only lacks that emotional involvement, it's absolutely pointless.The story follows a girl who found Christopher's diary, or more accurately happens to be present when someone else finds it and gives it to her. We find out early on that this girl, Kristin, is distantly related to the Foxworths. You would expect this to be a good setup for something interesting, but nope: that part of the plot NEVER GOES ANYWHERE.As for the diary itself, it can be somewhat interesting at times but falls short. You would expect it to retell the original story from Chris's perspective, and it does, but it is unbelievable how little this actually adds to the story.As for the main plot of the story framing the excerpts from the diary, there barely even is one. Kristin goes to school, loves her dad, gets good grades, and refuses to have sex with her boyfriend a lot. Hohum, the end. This works better if you consider this the first half of a complete novel with its sequel, but even then, much like Kristin does to her boyfriend Kane, it's all lukewarm buildup with no payoff.If Neiderman wrote this one he's really gone downhill since Garden of Shadows.
